    Thanks to the work of more than 469 volunteers, more than 18,200 tax returns were prepared returning more than $21.3 million in tax refunds to local families last year.As the 2014 tax season approaches, United Way of Greater Cincinnati is seeking volunteers to help provide free tax preparation to hard-working families, many who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), at 28 locations in Hamilton County, Clermont County, Butler County, Northern Kentucky and Southeast Indiana. No previous experience is necessary. Volunteers will receive free IRS tax training and certification, allowing them to learn a skill that may also be beneficial in their personal and professional lives. The average refund was $1,170.Overall, there has been a 273 percent increase in refunds since 2006.Beginning in January, 741 volunteers from around the region helped hardworking, low-income families determine whether they qualified for EITC and other tax credits that return more money to taxpayers. Of the thousands of families who received the assistance, 19 percent claimed the EITC, receiving a total of $5,653,127 additional cash back.
