AUGUST 2015 Tax Assistance Update:

2014 Health Insurance Marketplace Recipients:
Did You Receive a Letter about Non-Filing?
United Way and the IRS Can Help

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has sent letters to those who

  • did not file a 2014 tax return;
  • enrolled in 2014 health insurance coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace; AND
  • received advance payments of the premium tax credit to help them pay for their health insurance as part of the Affordable Care Act.

These individuals MUST FILE a 2014 tax return – even if they don’t usually have to file – to reconcile their advance payments and in order to be eligible for savings on their Marketplace health plan in 2016. Those who don’t file a 2014 return would have to pay the full cost for a Marketplace health plan in 2016; in addition, the IRS may require them to pay back some or all of their 2014 advance payments.

Most of these taxpayers can file online for free at http://www.myfreetaxes.com.  This site, sponsored by United Way Worldwide, Goodwill and Walmart, is free, secure and easy to use.

To assist those who prefer in-person help to file their 2014 returns, the Regional Volunteer Tax Assistance Collaborative, led by United Way of Greater Cincinnati, will open a free tax preparation site on

Saturday, September 26, 2015
BY APPOINTMENT ONLY, 9 a.m. – noon
Healing Center, 11345 Century Circle West, Cincinnati, 45246.
Spanish interpretation service will be available.
To schedule an appointment, call 513-346-4080.

The site will be staffed with IRS-trained Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) volunteers. If there is additional demand, a second site will open in Covington in October.

What filers will need: Form 1095-A, which they should have received from their Marketplace. These can also be obtained at www.HealthCare.gov or by calling the Marketplace at 1-800-318-2596. Filers will also need to bring their Social Security card, picture ID, last year’s taxes, and documentation for all income received during the year  (See list: What to Bring).
