September 2015 Tax Assistance Update:

2015 Health Insurance Marketplace Recipients:
Did You Receive a Letter about Non-Filing?

United Way and the IRS Can Help

Individuals who enrolled in 2015 health insurance coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace; AND received advance payments of the premium tax credit to help pay for their health insurance as part of the Affordable Care Act MUST FILE a 2014 tax return – even if they don’t usually have to file taxes.

Those who have not filed their 2014 tax return could have to pay the full cost for a Marketplace health plan in 2016; in addition, the IRS may require them to pay back some or all of their 2014 advance payments. Many of these individuals will have received a letter from the IRS or the Health Care Marketplace reminding them to file.

Most of these taxpayers can file online for free at  This site, sponsored by United Way Worldwide, Goodwill and Walmart, is free, secure and easy to use.

To assist those who prefer in-person help to file their 2014 returns, the Regional Volunteer Tax Assistance Collaborative, led by United Way of Greater Cincinnati, will open a free tax preparation site on

TIP: If you're a single parent, you may be able to file your returns as head of household rather than single. The advantage? You get a bigger standard deduction, and you'll fit into a better tax bracket. In order to be considered head of household, you must pay more than half the cost of providing a home for a qualifying person (your child).
