Check your withholding:
The IRS is encouraging people to check their withholding as soon as possible, especially some key groups of taxpayers. If you have children or dependents, two or more jobs, itemize deductions or have high income or complex tax situations, make sure to visit the IRS Withholding Calculator to perform a “paycheck checkup.”  This can help ensure you have the right amount of tax withheld from your pay following recent tax-law changes. In Person Help at volunteer tax sites

MFTLogoMyFreeTaxes is an easy, safe, secure, free online tool for filing federal and state taxes, sponsored by United Way and powered by H&R Block.  You can work from home, or from a library or computer lab.
Use this service if you are:

  • Comfortable with computers  or smartphones (if you use facebook or shop online, you can use this system.)
  • Earn less than $66,000/year.
  • Use MyFreeTaxes to prepare your tax return; you can then print and mail, or file online.
  • To file online, you will need to verify identity using last years’ tax data or credit rating information.

Trained, certified volunteers offer in-person help to file your taxes at sites throughout the community.  Sites are open January-April. Most VITA sites can do your current and 2 prior year taxes; check for details at your site.

VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) offers 34 volunteer-run sites sponsored by United Way and partner agencies at locations throughout our region.  Some sites are by appointment, others offer walk-in service.

Ohio Benefits Bank assistance  16 sites, most by appointment.   Call 1-800-648-1176  to ask about sites that provide tax assistance.

Use this service if you are:

  • Household income under $54,000
  • Working, self-employed, retired, disabled or unemployed.
  • No rental income; simple investment income; no business with employees or inventory, no foreclosure in past tax year.
  • Willing to be patient and to wait in line for the next available volunteer.
